When we feel sick and are prescribed or not medicine we take them without hesitation to relief any symptoms we might have, but most of us are hesitant to get supplements that are beneficial to our body and would support the quality of our daily lives.
Everywhere we go, the first thing we turn to every time that we will be needing energy is food. Most of the time, the kind of food that we look for are the ones good for our tastebuds, and readily available within reach, regardless of them being good for our health. A lot of us do not have the privilege to have all the time in the world to always check on the nutrients of each food that we ingest. The big question is, is this enough for our body to be at its best state?
This is where the importance of taking nutritional, and dietary supplements come in.
What exactly are supplements, and why do we need them?
A recent survey data from the 2022 Consumer Survey on Dietary Supplements reveals that 4 out of 5 Americans have reported to be using either nutritional, or dietary supplements. Ever since the pandemic began, 49% of supplement users have added new kinds of supplements or increased their dosage intake. The more educated are evidently the ones to be the leading consumers of supplements. When asked about their main purpose for taking their supplements, they responded that it is to maintain their health, live healthier, and adopt a better lifestyle. As a result, these users engage in activities like exercising, maintaining a balanced diet and healthy weight, paying more attention to their doctors, and regularly getting quality rest.
From a survey conducted in 2021 in the Middle East, mainly Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, and UAE, 43.8% have reportedly said that their dietary habits have changed for the better since the pandemic began. 71.4% of the 2,100 participants also stated to believe that a person needs to improve their immunity by taking dietary supplements. The data also shows that 45.4% are optimistic that taking dietary supplements can help in treating a person infected with Coronavirus.
Supplements help us from staying away from nutrient deficiency.
Nutrient deficiency can lead to worse situations like being prescribed with higher dosages of supplements, or worst – maintenance medication. To prevent nutrient deficiency, we must follow a balanced diet that includes all variety of foods from all food groups. Supplements becomes necessary in some cases to ensure the safety of our body’s needs.
Some supplements are even made of ingredients that our bodies cannot produce.
Supplement with ingredients that our bodies cannot produce or store like Vitamin C for example help with our overall well being, energy levels, focus amongst other benefits. Another example for this is Omega-3 fatty acids. These are important for maintaining heart health and brain function. They cannot be produced by the body, but you can get them from great sources of food and supplements. The intake of these omega-3 fatty acids related supplements have been shown to be a great source in treating a lot of health related conditions.
Even with a balanced diet, it is still not guaranteed for us to get all the nutrients we need.
With all the importation, and exportation processes, our food must have lost most of its gem before even reaching our plates. Infused with vitamins, and minerals, taking supplements is a helpful way to boost our body's developement, and support it to perform better.
